The Street That Locals Love
While Bourbon Street gets the tourist headlines, locals will tell you the real music scene lives on Frenchmen Street. Tucked in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood just beyond the French Quarter, this three-block stretch comes alive every single night of the week with live jazz, brass bands, blues, funk, and everything in between. Best of all? Most of it is free or low-cost.
The Main Venues
The Spotted Cat Music Club
One of Frenchmen Street's most beloved institutions, The Spotted Cat has no cover charge and serves cocktails in plastic cups. The room is small and intimate, the bands are excellent, and the dancing spills out onto the sidewalk. Expect traditional jazz, swing, and hot club-style music. Arrive early for a spot near the front.
d.b.a.
A slightly larger venue with a great craft beer and whiskey selection, d.b.a. books an eclectic range of acts — from jazz and blues to funk and Afrobeat. There's usually a small cover. The sound system is reliably good and the crowd tends to be knowledgeable music fans.
The Maison
One of the bigger clubs on the street, The Maison has multiple stages and books acts throughout the night. It's a good option if you want to venue-hop and catch different styles of music without going too far. They also have a solid food menu.
Bamboula's
A neighborhood bar with live music and Caribbean-influenced food. The outdoor patio is perfect on warm nights, and the vibe is relaxed and welcoming. Great for earlier in the evening before the street gets crowded.
Tips for Visiting Frenchmen Street
- Go on a weeknight. The music is just as good Tuesday through Thursday, and the crowds are far more manageable than weekends.
- Walk the strip first. Stroll the whole street before committing to a venue. Every club has a different act, and you can hear snippets from the doorway.
- Bring cash. Many clubs prefer or require cash for covers and drinks. ATMs are nearby but charge fees.
- Don't overlook the street itself. Brass bands often set up on the sidewalk and play for tips. Some of the best music you'll hear all night might be right there on the pavement.
- Arrive before 10pm. The best spots fill up fast. Getting there by 9pm gives you time to settle in before the night peaks.
Getting There
Frenchmen Street is a short walk from the French Quarter — head down Esplanade Avenue toward the river and you'll hit it. Rideshares drop off easily, and the area is very walkable. Be mindful of your surroundings walking back late at night and stick to well-lit routes.
What to Expect
On any given night you might catch a tight jazz quartet, a second-line drummer warming up, or a full brass band parade that materializes from nowhere and takes over the street. That spontaneity is the magic of Frenchmen Street. There's no script, no cover charge for the sidewalk, and no guarantee of what you'll find — only the near-certainty that it will be memorable.
